TikTok Introduces Control Over AI-Generated Content Visibility

TikTok Expands User Control Over AI-Generated Content in Feed

TikTok is enhancing its user experience by allowing users to dictate the visibility of AI-generated content in their “For You” feeds. This new feature, part of the app’s “Manage Topics” tool, empowers users to customize their content preferences in response to the growing prominence of AI in digital media.

With this update, TikTok provides users the ability to adjust the frequency of content related to over 10 categories, such as Dance, Sports, and Food & Drinks, while also focusing on AI-generated content (AIGC). According to a company blog post, the purpose of this AIGC setting is to give users a more tailored content experience, rather than entirely removing certain types of content.

Recent trends show major tech companies like OpenAI and Meta leaning towards AI-centric feeds. Meta, for instance, has launched a new platform named Vibes for sharing short AI-generated videos, while OpenAI recently introduced Sora, aimed at creating and sharing similar content.

Since the inception of Sora, TikTok users have begun incorporating realistic AI-generated videos into their posts, covering a multitude of topics including history and celebrity culture. With this new control feature, TikTok aims to cater to diverse user preferences, enabling those who favor AI content to see more, while providing an option for those who wish to limit exposure.

To access this functionality, users can navigate to their Settings, select “Content Preferences,” and click on “Manage Topics” to adjust the slider for AI-generated content visibility according to their preferences. TikTok indicates that this feature will be available in the coming weeks.

In addition to user controls, TikTok is advancing its efforts to accurately label AI-produced content by testing a new “invisible watermarking” technology. This new method aims to enhance content labeling reliability, making it more difficult for users to remove identifiers from AI-generated visuals. TikTok will implement this on content generated through its tools, such as AI Editor Pro, and will continue utilizing the cross-industry Content Credentials from C2PA to ensure accurate AI attribution.

In line with these initiatives, TikTok has also announced a $2 million AI literacy fund aimed at supporting organizations like Girls Who Code in creating educational content about AI literacy and safety.
