Ex-Meta Employees Launch Stream: Innovative Smart Ring for Voice Notes and Music Control

In an exciting development within the voice-activated technology sector, Sandbar has unveiled Stream, a smart ring designed for seamless interaction with AI and music controls. Founded by former Meta interface designers Mina Fahmi and Kirak Hong, the ring aims to enhance productivity by allowing users to capture voice notes effortlessly.

The device is described as "a mouse for voice" and features both a microphone and a touchpad, enabling users to record thoughts by simply pressing and holding the pad. Unlike traditional journaling apps that can hinder spontaneous thought capture, Stream provides a more intuitive solution, fostering a natural flow of ideas.

Key Features and Functionality:

  • Voice Activation: The ring’s microphone is off by default and activates only when prompted, ensuring privacy during note-taking.
  • AI Integration: Users can interact with an embedded AI chatbot that assists in organizing and editing notes.
  • Media Control: The ring’s flat surface enables users to play, pause, skip tracks, and adjust volume, enhancing audio control during various activities.
  • Data Security: Sandbar emphasizes user data control with encryption features and plans to support data exports to popular apps like Notion.

Fahmi, who previously worked with companies such as Kernel and Magic Leap, noted that the idea for Stream emerged as he sought a more effective way to document his thoughts—inspired by the potential of large language models.

Preorders for the Stream ring will open this Wednesday, priced at $249 for the silver model and $299 for gold. A Pro subscription service will also be available, offering unlimited interactions with the AI assistant after an introductory three-month free trial.

As competition intensifies in the voice-AI hardware market, with other innovative devices emerging, Sandbar aims to differentiate Stream by providing an intuitive interface that prioritizes user expression while maintaining data privacy. The company has successfully raised $13 million in funding, indicating strong investor confidence in its vision and product.

With its planned shipping date set for next summer, Stream may soon become a valuable tool for those seeking a hands-free way to manage their thoughts and music in one compact device.
