Disney has announced the introduction of an innovative animatronic featuring Olaf, the beloved snowman from the Frozen franchise. This charming character is set to stroll through the highly anticipated World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris and will also make special appearances at the World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disneyland.
In a recent 30-minute video, Disney showcased Olaf’s prototype, highlighting his ability to walk on small snowball legs, express emotions, and interact with guests. Disney Imagineering Paris executive Michel Den Dulk demonstrated the robot’s interactivity by showing how visitors could replace Olaf’s nose and arms.
To enhance Olaf’s lifelike movements, the Imagineering team employed artificial intelligence reinforcement learning, significantly reducing the time needed to program his graceful motions. His soft, snow-like exterior enables detailed articulation of his mouth, eyes, and removable features.
This announcement comes on the heels of a recent four-hour documentary by Defunctland, exploring the history of Disney’s animatronics and their oft-promised characters that tend to vanish after limited appearances. Past examples include the Wall-E robot, Groot, and various Star Wars droids, which were largely used for promotional purposes before being shelved. While Disney has showcased robots like the 13-foot Big Dino, this latest Olaf creation raises hopes that he may follow a different path, bringing continued joy to park visitors.
