Google’s DeepMind has launched WeatherNext 2, an innovative AI-powered weather forecasting model designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of global weather predictions. Promising significant improvements, the model can now deliver precise forecasts up to two weeks in advance, including critical data on temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind patterns. Notably, WeatherNext 2 is expected to advance the accuracy of tracking tropical storm trajectories, offering precise hurricane path predictions up to three days ahead, an enhancement from its predecessor that could only forecast for two days.
This upgraded model also incorporates hourly forecasting, allowing users to obtain more granular and timely weather insights. According to DeepMind, this iteration is eight times faster than its earlier version, a feature that could greatly benefit sectors like energy trading by enabling more informed decision-making.
DeepMind’s researchers attribute these advancements to a novel approach in weather modeling. Unlike older methods that required complex machine learning processes similar to those used in image generation—thus relying on extensive computing power—WeatherNext 2 streamlines predictions through a single processing step. While AI has proven to be effective in weather forecasting, it’s not infallible. DeepMind acknowledges limitations in predicting rare rainfall and snowfall events, largely due to the gaps in training data. As Ferran Alet, a researcher at DeepMind, stated, “It’s one limitation of our forecast, but one that we are working on improving.”
