OpenAI Unveils Study Mode in ChatGPT to Enhance Critical Thinking for Students

OpenAI has officially launched a new feature known as Study Mode in ChatGPT, designed to foster critical thinking skills among students rather than merely providing direct answers. This innovative mode prompts users with questions to assess their comprehension, sometimes withholding answers to encourage deeper engagement with the content.

Beginning Tuesday, Study Mode is being rolled out to users on ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team subscription plans. The company plans to extend this feature to its Edu subscribers, predominantly targeting students whose educational institutions have opted for a bulk subscription package, in the coming weeks.

Addressing Educational Concerns

Study Mode aims to tackle concerns regarding the widespread reliance on ChatGPT among students. Research indicates that while the AI can serve as an effective tutoring tool, it risks diminishing critical thinking abilities. A study published in June highlighted that individuals using ChatGPT for essay writing display diminished brain activity compared to those relying on Google Search or traditional methods.

In response to educators’ fears over the potential misuse of generative AI in academic settings, many schools had previously imposed bans on its use. However, a trend has emerged in 2023, with some of these bans being lifted as educators recognize that ChatGPT has become an integral tool in the lives of students.

A New Approach to Learning

With the introduction of Study Mode, OpenAI seeks to redefine ChatGPT’s role from a simple answer provider to a more interactive learning assistant. This shift aligns with similar initiatives, such as Anthropic’s Learning Mode, which was launched for its AI chatbot Claude earlier this year.

Utilizing Study Mode requires a commitment from students, emphasizing the necessity for genuine interest in the learning process rather than merely completing assignments. OpenAI views this feature as a foundational step towards enhancing educational experiences with generative AI, with plans to provide further insights into how students utilize these technologies in their learning journeys.
