Hyundai Motor Group’s Boston Dynamics has officially introduced its latest Atlas humanoid robot during a live demonstration at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. This innovative robot, which stands at six feet three inches and weighs approximately 200 pounds, is set to revolutionize manufacturing processes, particularly in Hyundai’s electric vehicle assembly plant located near Savannah, Georgia, with deployment scheduled for 2028.
Zachary Jackowski, general manager of Atlas at Boston Dynamics, expressed excitement by stating, “For the first time ever in public, please welcome Atlas to the stage.” The Atlas robot is designed for autonomous movements that assist in automotive assembly, marking Boston Dynamics’ commitment to advanced robotics over the past three decades.
Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, highlighted the significance of Atlas by saying, “This is the best robot we have ever built,” emphasizing its potential to transform industrial operations and contribute to a future where robots can enhance everyday life in homes and workplaces.
Hyundai currently owns more than 80% of Boston Dynamics, having acquired the company from SoftBank in 2021. The acquisition aimed to leverage Hyundai’s manufacturing expertise alongside Boston Dynamics’ robotics technology for factory automation and logistics improvements.
In a noteworthy update, the Atlas robot has transitioned from hydraulic systems to a fully electric design, enhancing both its dexterity and lifting capacity, which can reach up to 110 pounds. The robot features three operational modes: fully autonomous, operator-controlled, and tablet-directed actions. Notably, the streamlined design reduces the number of unique parts, facilitating compatibility with automotive supply chains.
In addition to the Atlas unveiling, Boston Dynamics announced a strategic partnership with Google DeepMind, focusing on integrating advanced artificial intelligence models to empower the robot. DeepMind is recognized for its cutting-edge AI research, including robust models that enhance the robot’s cognitive abilities and visual recognition capabilities.
This partnership intends to push the boundaries of “physical AI,” enabling machines to perceive and interact more intelligently with their environments, ultimately paving the way for more sophisticated autonomous robotics in both industrial and domestic settings.
