Figma Targets India for Strategic Growth Beyond Design Services

Figma Expands Operations in India to Strengthen Developer Relations

Figma, the innovative design platform, is strategically reinforcing its foothold in India by inaugurating a local office in Bengaluru and actively recruiting Indian talent. This initiative aims to enhance engagement with one of its largest user bases while extending its reach beyond designers to attract developers—a critical segment of its growth strategy.

Founded in 2012 by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace, Figma made waves in the design community with its browser-based interface when most industry professionals were reliant on conventional desktop software. Initially met with skepticism, the platform has evolved into a preferred collaborative tool for UX and product design teams. Figma now aims to replicate this success with developers, considering India a vital market to facilitate this transition.

India is home to a vast developer community, recognized by major tech players like Microsoft, which reports nearly 22 million developers on GitHub. Currently, developers account for about 33% of Figma’s global user base. Despite this, Figma faces challenges in perception; many Indian developers still regard it primarily as a design platform rather than a comprehensive tool for product development.

“India hosts a significant population of developers who may not yet consider Figma as their go-to tool,” stated Abhishek Mathur, VP of Engineering at Figma, in a recent interview. “While much has been achieved by the community, we are eager to contribute and highlight our capabilities in empowering developers beyond just coding.”

The newly established office marks a crucial step in Figma’s ongoing international expansion, complementing existing locations in cities like Tokyo, Singapore, London, and São Paulo. Previously, Figma catered to Indian users remotely from its Singapore office but has now recognized the importance of local engagement in light of its growing user base and community activities.

As of the third quarter of 2025, Figma reported that approximately 85% of its users are international, with India being its second-largest market following the U.S. The platform services users in 85% of India’s 28 official states, and over 40% of the top 100 companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange are among its customers.

Globally, Figma boasts around 13 million weekly active users, with a notable community of over 25,000 members known as Friends of Figma in India. Although specific user numbers for India are undisclosed, Mathur has emphasized the country’s substantial contribution to Figma’s overall user base.

In May, Figma unveiled a suite of AI-driven features aimed at broadening its appeal beyond just design teams, positioning itself against competitors like Adobe and Canva, and even AI coding platforms such as Replit. One such feature, Figma Make, allows users to create functional web apps from natural language prompts, facilitating collaboration across design and development phases.

India has emerged as the leading market for Figma Make, with users generating more than 800,000 prototypes since its launch. Additionally, the platform’s developer mode, introduced in 2023, is increasingly being adopted by Indian developers, streamlining the process of converting designs into code.

Figma’s revenue from international markets, including India, accounted for half of its overall income in 2024. Although specific numbers were not disclosed, Mathur has acknowledged India as an “essential market” for the company, with local user feedback actively influencing product enhancements, such as improved code-export features.

“We are committed to hosting events and collaborating with a diverse range of customers, from small startups to large enterprises, while exploring further opportunities in the region,” Mathur concluded.
