U.S. ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with China’s leading tech company, Baidu Inc., to introduce autonomous taxi services across Europe, starting with the U.K. and Germany in 2026. As the second-largest ride-hailing provider in the U.S., Lyft has been eyeing an expansion into Europe, a market where its presence has been minimal compared to its major competitor, Uber Technologies Inc. Last week, Lyft took a significant step by acquiring FreeNow, the foremost multimobility application operating in over 150 cities across nine European countries, including the U.K., Germany, and France.
In a press release detailing the collaboration, Lyft revealed plans to deploy “thousands” of vehicles that will use Baidu’s Apollo Go technology in the coming years. However, the integration with the FreeNow app remains uncertain, pending regulatory approvals in both the U.K. and Germany.
Lyft’s CEO, David Risher, emphasized the company’s vision for a hybrid network where autonomous vehicles and human drivers collaborate to enhance customer experience. “We’re committed to working closely with local regulators to ensure these vehicles operate thoughtfully within their communities, providing benefits all around,” he stated.
This partnership follows Uber’s recent collaboration with the Chinese autonomous vehicle company Momenta, which aims to launch its own fleet of driverless taxis across unspecified European cities. Furthermore, Uber has previously partnered with Baidu for similar initiatives in the Middle East and parts of Asia outside China.
While Chinese driverless vehicles have been expanding globally, they have struggled to gain traction in the U.S. due to regulatory hurdles, tariffs, and security concerns. Currently, the American robotaxi landscape is largely dominated by Waymo, a subsidiary of Google LLC, alongside Tesla Inc. Nevertheless, Chinese companies benefit from lower manufacturing costs and less stringent regulations, enabling them to conduct extensive testing in various Chinese cities, including Wuhan, recognized as the largest of its kind globally.
