Waymo Accelerates Autonomous Vehicle Testing, Expanding to Four Additional Cities
Waymo is advancing its autonomous vehicle (AV) initiatives by expanding testing into four new cities, including Philadelphia, as part of its ambitious rollout strategy. The company’s focus on fully autonomous vehicle deployment follows successful trials in Miami and aims to launch operations in five more cities across Texas and Florida by 2026. Currently, Waymo’s robotaxi services are available in major urban areas such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Austin, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with recent announcements to bring services to San Diego, Las Vegas, and Detroit.
In a significant development for its nationwide ambitions, Waymo has received a temporary permit to test its vehicles in parts of New York City, specifically in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. This permit, granted in August, marked a pivotal moment as it allows for the first official testing deployment of AVs in a city renowned for its complex driving environment. The testing phase is anticipated to conclude by the end of September, although the rollout of a fully operational robotaxi service in New York remains a longer-term goal due to existing state regulations.
In addition to its growth in the U.S., Waymo is also eyeing international markets. The company plans to collaborate with Moove next year to launch a robotaxi service in London, marking its first major expansion outside the United States. While fully driverless cars are currently prohibited in the UK, upcoming legislation is set to initiate a regulatory framework that includes government-approved robotaxi pilot programs starting in the Spring.
