Tutor Intelligence Secures $34M to Expand AI Warehouse Robot Fleet

Tutor Intelligence Inc. has successfully secured $34 million in a Series A funding round to expedite the growth of its innovative fleet of AI-driven warehouse robots. The funding, led by Union Square Ventures alongside contributions from Fundomo and Neo, brings the total investment in the company to $42 million.

Originating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Tutor Intelligence focuses on creating data engines that support fleets of robots designed to efficiently move packaged goods in factories and warehouses across North America.

CEO Gruenstein identified a critical issue in real-world robotic applications: the lack of human-level physical intelligence in most existing robots. Recognizing that 8 billion people inherently possess the ability to discern, grasp, and relocate objects, the team developed a learning system that allows robotic systems to benefit from human expertise on a large scale. This approach promotes a “virtuous cycle” that enhances the robots’ learning process.

The company’s robots primarily consist of advanced robotic arms capable of identifying, grasping, and relocating objects to optimize sorting and placement. Tutor’s centralized intelligence system logs extensive real-world production experiences, which are further refined by human “tutors” who enhance the data quality. This feedback loop enables continual improvements, making the robots increasingly efficient and user-friendly.

Unlike traditional robotic solutions that adhere to rigid programming, Tutor’s robots adapt to various inventories found in active production settings. With continuous motor data analysis and progressive training, these machines are equipped to handle unexpected situations and swift operational changes.

Despite growing interest in automation, Gruenstein reports that approximately 90% of U.S. factories still function without robotic assistance, often relying on labor-intensive labor that can compromise safety. While larger companies seek automation solutions, traditional robotics can be too costly or inflexible, making them out of reach for nearly 99% of American manufacturers, many of which are small businesses.

To counter this barrier, Tutor offers its robots alongside an intelligent system that can be deployed to customer facilities within 30 days, with many becoming operational within just a day. The company utilizes a robot-as-a-service subscription model, aligning costs with typical labor expenses, thus enabling swift scaling for both large firms and small manufacturers.
