Spotify’s latest earnings call has revealed a significant development in the field of software coding, illustrating how artificial intelligence has transformed the role of top developers. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated that since December, the company’s leading engineers have not directly coded, attributing this shift to the implementation of advanced AI solutions that streamline development processes.

During the discussion, Spotify announced it successfully launched over 50 new features and upgrades to its streaming platform in 2025 alone, including innovative offerings like AI-driven Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and the recently introduced About This Song feature.

Spotify utilizes a proprietary internal system called “Honk,” which enhances coding efficiency and accelerates product deployment. This system allows engineers to deploy code remotely in real-time, utilizing generative AI, particularly Claude Code. Söderström provided a practical example showing how an engineer, while commuting, can instruct Claude via Slack to fix bugs or add features. The updated version of the app is subsequently sent back to the engineer’s device for final integration before reaching the office.

“This is a dataset that we are building right now that no one else is really building. It does not exist at this scale. And we see it improving every time we retrain our models,” he explained, highlighting the uniqueness of Spotify’s approach.

Lastly, analysts inquired about Spotify’s stance on AI-generated music. The company revealed that while it permits artists and labels to specify the metadata regarding the creation of songs, it maintains strict regulations to combat potential spam on the platform.
