Sora Update Introduces AI Pet Videos, Social Features, and Android App

Sora’s Android Launch Achieves Remarkable Growth with Nearly 500,000 Downloads in One Day

Sora, the new AI video application developed by OpenAI, has made an impressive entrance on the Google Play Store, amassing approximately 470,000 downloads on its launch day. According to recent data from app analytics firm Appfigures, this rapid uptake signifies a striking fourfold increase compared to its iOS counterpart, which initial reports indicated garnered around 110,000 downloads on launch day.

The disparity in download figures stems from varied availability: the iOS version was initially restricted to users in the U.S. and Canada and operated on an invite-only basis. In contrast, the Android version launched with broader access in markets including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, eliminating the invitation requirement for key regions at the end of October.

Key Highlights:

  • Impressive Day-One Downloads: Sora for Android saw close to 500,000 downloads, surpassing iOS figures significantly.
  • Geographical Advantage: The Android launch reached multiple markets while the iOS version was limited in scope.
  • User-Friendly Features: The app allows users to create videos with AI-driven prompts and includes interactive features like "Cameos" that animate user-generated content.

Despite its exclusivity, the iOS version quickly rose to popularity, recording over a million installs within just a week and maintaining a top-five position in the U.S. App Store’s free app ranking. The Android launch has reinforced a continued interest in Sora, particularly in the U.S., where it achieved about 296,000 downloads locally.

In the competitive landscape, Sora faces challenges from other AI video applications, including a recent mobile app launch from Meta AI for European users, following its debut in the U.S. market.
