San Francisco-based startup Sierra has swiftly climbed the ranks in the enterprise AI sector, announcing it has reached an impressive $100 million in annual revenue run rate (ARR) within just 21 months. This rapid ascent indicates a growing trend among businesses across various industries to adopt AI-driven customer service solutions.
Founded by Bret Taylor, ex-co-CEO of Salesforce, alongside seasoned tech veteran Clay Bavor, Sierra’s expansion has exceeded their original expectations. They expressed their surprise on their blog, stating, “That’s a heck of a lot quicker than we expected.”

The co-founders anticipated that tech-centric firms would be the early adopters of AI customer service agents. However, they were pleasantly surprised to see traditional businesses also engage with Sierra.

Employing an outcomes-based pricing model, Sierra charges clients based on completed tasks instead of traditional subscription fees, enhancing its appeal to customers.

Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor’s partnership dates back to their time at Google in 2005, where Taylor recruited Bavor as an associate product manager.
