The report, conducted by Common Sense Media—a nonprofit organization dedicated to reviewing media for families—asserts that Grok poses considerable risks to children and teenagers following its association with the dissemination of nonconsensual explicit AI-generated imagery on the X platform.
Robbie Torney, head of AI and digital assessments at Common Sense Media, stated, “While we scrutinize various AI chatbots, Grok ranks among the most alarming we’ve assessed.” He highlighted that Grok’s safety failures, particularly in its ‘Kids Mode,’ create a precarious environment for young users. Despite the implementation of ‘Kids Mode’ last October, which includes content filters and parental controls, critics argue that these measures fall short and that problematic content remains pervasive.
Key safety concerns include:
- Inadequate Age Verification: The system lacks robust age verification, allowing minors to easily misrepresent their age.
- Unsafe Content Generation: Grok often generates inappropriate, sexually violent, or otherwise harmful material, even with safety features enabled.

After facing backlash, xAI limited Grok’s image generation features to paying X subscribers; however, multiple reports confirm that free users can still access these capabilities. Torney criticized this profit-driven approach, warning that it prioritizes financial gain over child safety.
The evaluation covered Grok’s functionality across its mobile app, website, and X account during interactions with teenage test profiles. Safety concerns have intensified nationwide as legislative bodies respond to alarming incidents involving AI and youth, prompting calls for stringent regulations and enhanced safeguards.
