Perplexity Agrees to Partner with Getty Images for Content Access

Perplexity AI Partners with Getty Images for Extensive Content Access

Perplexity AI has forged a multi-year licensing agreement with Getty Images, allowing users to tap into Getty’s vast library of stock and editorial imagery. This collaboration will harness Getty’s API, integrating its extensive visual media into Perplexity’s AI-driven search and discovery tools, with a strong emphasis on proper attribution.

In a recent press release, Getty Images highlighted that Perplexity aims to enhance how images are displayed, ensuring that each image credit includes a link to the source. This initiative seeks to better educate users on the legal use of licensed imagery, especially pertinent as generative AI technologies gain traction, amidst growing concerns regarding copyright and attribution.

The partnership comes in the wake of legal challenges faced by Perplexity. Earlier this year, the company was sued by two prominent Japanese media entities, Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun, over allegations of unauthorized content copying and inaccurate credit attribution. Additionally, just this month, Perplexity was one of four companies targeted by Reddit in a lawsuit regarding data scraping without appropriate licensing.

Getty Images has previously navigated the complexities of AI, having banned AI-generated art on its platform last year due to copyright uncertainties. The company also sought legal action against Stable Diffusion for allegedly utilizing millions of protected images from its collection.

Nick Unsworth, Getty’s Vice President of Strategic Development, expressed that partnerships like this one are essential for AI platforms to enhance the quality and accuracy of information accessible to consumers, thereby fostering a more engaging and trustworthy experience.
