PayPal has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to enhance shopping experiences within ChatGPT, rolling out a new payment integration set to debut in 2026. The partnership will utilize the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an innovative open-source standard developed by OpenAI, allowing merchants to showcase their products directly via AI applications and enabling seamless AI-powered shopping experiences for users.
Through this integration, OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature, introduced in September, will allow ChatGPT users to finalize their orders, including shipping and payment details, without leaving the chat interface. Customers will utilize their PayPal wallets for transactions, ensuring buyer and seller protection, alongside robust dispute resolution services. PayPal will also provide a payments API to facilitate card transactions directly within ChatGPT.
In the upcoming year, merchants leveraging PayPal’s services will see their products gaining visibility on ChatGPT, initially targeting categories such as apparel, beauty, electronics, and home improvement. This integration will not require merchants to engage in any complex setups, as PayPal will manage routing and payment processing seamlessly.
Additionally, PayPal is launching an agentic commerce suite that empowers merchants to present their catalogs within various AI applications, accept payments across multiple platforms, and gain valuable insights into consumer behavior.
As consumers increasingly engage with AI-driven tools for everyday tasks, PayPal aims to establish itself as a leading payments partner in the evolving landscape of AI-enhanced shopping experiences. Earlier collaborations include partnerships with Perplexity for AI search tool payments and integrating Google’s Agent Payments Protocol.
“With hundreds of millions turning to ChatGPT each week and over 400 million users choosing PayPal for shopping, our partnership with OpenAI and adoption of the Agentic Commerce Protocol will streamline the journey from chat to checkout,” stated Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal, highlighting the significant impact of this collaboration.
