OpenAI has joined forces with Tata Group to establish a significant 100-megawatt AI data center in India, with ambitions to scale this capacity to 1 gigawatt. This strategic partnership is a key component of OpenAI’s Stargate project, which aims to enhance AI infrastructure and promote enterprise adoption on a global scale.
Announced on Thursday, this collaboration positions OpenAI as the inaugural customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center, starting with the initial 100 megawatts. The partnership not only involves deploying ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce but also seeks to standardize the development of AI-native software using OpenAI’s tools.
Under the “OpenAI for India” initiative, this collaboration underscores OpenAI’s dedication to expanding its influence within a country where more than 100 million people utilize ChatGPT weekly, including students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs. This high level of engagement makes India a critical market for OpenAI as they enhance their enterprise and infrastructure investments.
The establishment of a local data center will enable OpenAI to operate its advanced AI models within India, significantly reducing latency for users while adhering to data residency and security regulations pertinent to sensitive sectors and governmental tasks. This initiative is vital for businesses that manage critical data and must comply with local data management and digital infrastructure laws, potentially broadening OpenAI’s client base in sectors requiring in-country data processing.

Additionally, OpenAI is set to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing its existing presence in New Delhi.
