This ultrasound technology leverages sound waves for data collection, thereby minimizing surgical requirements associated with conventional BCIs.
In a blog post, Merge Labs outlined their commitment to developing transformative technologies that interact with neurons through molecules instead of electrodes. This approach aims to facilitate information transmission using advanced modalities like ultrasound, eliminating the need for invasive brain tissue implants.
Originating from an initiative within Forest Neurotech, a nonprofit focused on BCI development, Merge Labs has evolved from the successful Forest-1 system, which utilizes ultrasound for brain imaging. This system distinguishes itself by offering greater range and, consequently, enhanced data collection related to brain activity.
Reports from the Financial Times revealed that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is among the founding members of Merge Labs, although he has chosen not to invest personally. The startup aims for an impressive valuation of approximately $850 million during its initial fundraising efforts.
OpenAI announced its intention to support Merge Labs in establishing “scientific foundation models and other advanced tools.” This collaboration includes the potential for custom machine learning models tailored to specific clinical datasets, showcasing how AI can augment BCI capabilities.
