Open Source Initiative "twAIn Robotics" Launched by Working Group

The TWAIN Working Group has officially launched the “twAIn Robotics” open-source initiative, marking a significant expansion of its mission to establish an open communication standard for robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). This announcement follows the successful TWAIN Converge Conference held on November 12-13, 2025, in Safety Harbor, Florida, where the growing industry demand for such standards was clearly demonstrated.

This new initiative aims to foster collaboration among robotics hardware manufacturers, software developers, systems integrators, and end-user organizations to develop a robust, interoperable communication protocol. Kevin Neal, Executive Director of the TWAIN Working Group, emphasized that “twAIn Robotics represents the logical next step in our mission, applying the same standards of interoperability that TWAIN has championed in the imaging industry for over 30 years.”

To bolster the initiative, the TWAIN Working Group will conduct weekly technical and marketing meetings, utilizing its long-standing structured processes. The project envisions an ecosystem that speeds up innovation in both robotics and AI, facilitating integration across diverse sectors.

Organizations interested in contributing to the development of this next-generation standard can join through two membership tiers: twAIn Robotics Board Membership for $25,000 and Associate Membership for $10,000. Additionally, bundled memberships are available through partnerships with industry leaders like Crickets Continuum and Keypoint Intelligence, providing access to vital resources such as market research, development support, and certification services.

TWAIN’s extensive experience in establishing stable and secure standards positions it uniquely to lead efforts toward interoperability in the robotics and AI domains. The Group expresses gratitude to all participants at the conference, who play a crucial role in this new phase of TWAIN’s evolution.
