Lyft Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with Benteler International AG, a leading auto parts manufacturer, to introduce an autonomous shuttle service across the United States, set to debut in late 2026. This collaboration aims to enhance public transit options, leveraging Benteler’s expertise in autonomous vehicle deployment through its Benteler Mobility division.
The shuttles, designed by Benteler’s Holon GmbH unit, will be all-electric self-driving buses capable of accommodating up to 15 passengers, featuring a streamlined design without a steering wheel or pedals. To support this initiative, Benteler plans to invest “tens of millions of dollars,” covering vehicle financing, maintenance, and other operational responsibilities.
Equipped with Mobileye Global Inc.’s Mobileye Drive autonomous technology, the Holon urban shuttles will incorporate advanced sensor systems, featuring 11 cameras, nine lidar sensors, and six radars, allowing for reliable operation in various weather conditions and low visibility.
Lyft intends to initially deploy these shuttles in collaboration with airports and municipalities, positioning them as vital transportation solutions for urban areas and travel hubs.
Jeremy Bird, Lyft’s executive vice president of driver experience, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “Benteler Mobility is exactly the kind of partner we need to accelerate our AV ambitions.” Both companies share a vision for owning and operating vehicles at scale, which is a distinctive approach within the industry.
This venture adds to Lyft’s existing partnerships aimed at enhancing its autonomous vehicle capabilities, including previous collaborations with Mobileye and May Mobility for supporting self-driving minivans.
As Lyft moves forward, it mirrors rival Uber Technologies Inc.’s strategy, which involves aligning with various partners, including recent investments in Lucid Group Inc. and Nuro Inc. to further its autonomous driving ambitions.
