OpenAI Launches Free One-Year Access to ChatGPT Go for Indian Users
In a strategic move to enhance its presence in India, OpenAI has announced today that its ChatGPT Go subscription will be available free for one year to users who sign up during a limited promotional window commencing November 4. The initiative aims to support OpenAI’s expansion in one of its vital markets, the world’s most populous nation.
While the duration of this promotional offer remains unspecified, existing subscribers of ChatGPT Go in India can also benefit from this complimentary 12-month plan. Launched in August at a competitive price of under $5 per month, ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s most budget-friendly subscription model and has already been introduced in Indonesia and 16 other Asian countries.
India, which boasts over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, is a critical focus for OpenAI. The company’s recent establishment of an office in New Delhi and the formation of a local team underscore its commitment to this burgeoning market.
Key features of ChatGPT Go include tenfold usage compared to the free version, enhanced capabilities for image generation, file uploads, and improved memory systems designed for more personalized user interactions. “The creativity and adoption we’re witnessing among our Indian users are inspiring,” stated Nick Turley, OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT. “We look forward to seeing the remarkable projects our users will create with these tools.”
OpenAI faces competition from other tech giants aiming to capture India’s youthful demographic. Recently, Perplexity partnered with Airtel to provide free Pro subscriptions to its 360 million subscribers, while Google introduced a one-year complimentary AI Pro plan for Indian students.
In addition, OpenAI is set to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where it is anticipated to unveil further India-specific initiatives targeting local developers and businesses.
