Ex-Apple Face ID Engineers Unveil Robotics Startup Lyte, Securing $107M

Robotics startup Lyte AI Inc. has officially launched, securing an impressive $107 million in funding. Founded in 2021 by former engineers from Apple Inc.’s Face ID team, Lyte aims to revolutionize how robots perceive and interact with their environment. The company is developing an innovative unified perception platform that integrates various sensing technologies, moving away from traditional robotic systems that rely solely on basic sensors or disjointed components for vision and motion control.

Lyte’s flagship technology, LyteVision, merges three distinct data sources: visual imaging via cameras, inertial motion sensing, and an advanced 4D sensor. This advanced system not only measures distances but also tracks the movement of objects over time, providing robots a deeper understanding of their surroundings compared to systems that treat data streams independently.

Described as a “visual brain” for robotics, LyteVision enhances sensory input and processing capabilities, enabling robots to perceive objects, interpret motion, and make real-time decisions based on their environment. This technology is designed for a variety of applications, from mobile robots and robotic arms to humanoid machines and autonomous vehicles, such as robotaxis. By creating a cohesive sensor suite bolstered by artificial intelligence, Lyte aims to equip robotic systems to operate effectively in complex, real-world settings rather than just controlled environments.

In an interview with Bloomberg, CEO and co-founder Alexander Shpunt stated, “We are trying to take the best things that Apple taught us—attention to detail, operational excellence, and how to wow customers—to the robotics market.” He further emphasized the importance of developing robots that are responsive and capable of safely navigating their surroundings, stating a desire to avoid “zombie robots.”
