App developers aiming to launch their creations within ChatGPT can now submit their applications for review and potential publication, OpenAI announced on Wednesday. The introduction of a new app directory within ChatGPT’s tool menu, referred to as an “app store,” marks a significant development as the company seeks to enhance user experience.

In October, OpenAI revealed its plan to integrate apps into the ChatGPT interface, emphasizing that this initiative would enrich functionalities accessible to users. Prominent platforms such as Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva have already publicly announced their integrations, enabling users to seamlessly access services during Chat conversations. With this new move, OpenAI is broadening opportunities for additional developers to join the ecosystem.

“Apps augment ChatGPT interactions by incorporating new contextual insights and enabling users to perform actions such as ordering groceries, transforming outlines into presentations, or searching for apartments,” OpenAI stated on Wednesday.

The Apps SDK, still in its beta phase, equips developers with essential tools to craft unique experiences tailored for ChatGPT users. Following app development, creators can submit their applications via the OpenAI Developer platform, allowing them to monitor the approval progress. OpenAI has indicated that several approved applications will begin launching within ChatGPT throughout the coming year.

This initiative represents a substantial step for OpenAI as it expands its app ecosystem, ultimately offering users more incentives to engage with the ChatGPT platform.
