Caterpillar is taking a significant step towards enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) and automation within its construction equipment through a strategic partnership with Nvidia, a renowned semiconductor company. Known as “Cat AI,” this innovative system leverages Nvidia’s cutting-edge Jetson Thor platform and was showcased at CES recently.

Additionally, Caterpillar is experimenting with digital twin technology for construction sites using Nvidia’s Omniverse resources. This initiative aims to optimize scheduling scenarios and accurately forecast material requirements for various projects. Each Caterpillar machine transmits approximately 2,000 messages per second back to the company, providing invaluable data that aids in these simulations.

Caterpillar has already deployed fully autonomous vehicles within the mining sector, and this new pilot program marks a pivotal advancement towards integrating more automation into their product range. “The reason that we started here was it was a real challenge of our customers today that needed to be addressed,” Hootman explained. “We felt like we could bring this to market pretty quickly and build a strong technology foundation for the future.”
