Canva Expands Portfolio with Animation and Marketing Startups Acquisition

Canva Strengthens Its Creative Suite Through Dual Startup Acquisitions

In a strategic move to enhance its creative offerings, Canva has announced the acquisition of two innovative startups: Cavalry, specializing in 2D motion animation, and Mango AI, which focuses on boosting video ad performance. This development comes as Canva seeks to expand its capabilities in the digital design space.

Cavalry, based in the UK, has established itself in sectors such as advertising, marketing, gaming, and generative art. Canva states that this acquisition will integrate Cavalry’s animation tools into Affinity, its professional creative editing suite renowned for photo, vector, and layout editing. Since its revamp last year, Affinity has been made accessible to users for free, resulting in over five million downloads.

The integration of Cavalry’s technology aims to fulfill Canva’s vision of a comprehensive professional suite that includes not only photo and vector editing but also motion graphics. The company emphasized that this inclusion will create a “full-stack Creative OS,” designed to meet the needs of professional creatives with depth and control.

Alongside Cavalry, Canva has also acquired the stealth startup Mango AI. Founded by data science veterans Nirmal Govind and Vinith Misra, Mango AI is developing reinforcement learning systems to enhance ad performance. Govind will transition to Canva as its first Chief Algorithms Officer, while Misra will focus on improving Canva’s marketing products.

Mango AI’s technology has already facilitated better ad creation and performance outcomes for its clientele. The acquisitions aim to solidify Canva’s position as a robust marketing solution, with potential expansions into video creation and nuanced measurement capabilities. Following a successful year ending with $4 billion in annualized revenue and a user base of over 265 million, Canva is poised for further growth in the competitive digital marketing landscape.
