Bluesky Introduces Blue Check Verification System

Bluesky Unveils Blue Check Verification System to Enhance Account Authenticity

Bluesky has officially announced the rollout of its Blue Check verification system, a significant development that confirms earlier speculation surrounding this feature. Aimed at improving user trust, the Blue Check will certify the legitimacy of notable accounts, similar to the iconic blue checkmark formerly used by Twitter.

Details on the Verification Process

Initially, the Blue Check will be issued through a select group of “Trusted Verifiers”—independent organizations authorized to validate accounts. For instance, companies can verify their public relations team members, ensuring that users recognize these individuals as credible sources for company-related news.

Bluesky emphasizes that its moderation team will assess each verification request to uphold the authenticity of verified accounts.

Combating Disinformation

This added layer of verification is particularly crucial for public figures, including celebrities, journalists, and politicians, as it helps mitigate the spread of disinformation from impersonators. Currently, over 270,000 accounts have connected their Bluesky username to an official website to support this verification process.

“Domain handles remain a critical aspect of verification on Bluesky,” the team stated in a recent blog post. “We’ve also received feedback indicating that a more prominent visual indicator would assist users in identifying authentic accounts.”

Future Plans for Verification Requests

At this time, Bluesky is not accepting applications for the verification process. However, the platform has announced intentions to introduce a request form in the future, making it easier for users to seek verification as the system matures.
