Amazon Appoints Peter DeSantis to Lead New AI Division
In a strategic move to enhance its position in the artificial intelligence sector, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced on Wednesday that Peter DeSantis, a seasoned executive within Amazon Web Services (AWS), will head a newly established AI division. This initiative signals Amazon’s commitment to advancing its AI technologies, including the Nova AI models and innovations in silicon and quantum computing that are designed to improve the speed and efficiency of AI applications.
DeSantis brings 27 years of experience at Amazon, having served as Senior Vice President at AWS for the past eight years. AWS plays a critical role in powering approximately one-third of the internet, making DeSantis’s leadership particularly pivotal at this juncture. During the recent re:Invent conference, the company reiterated its focus on leveraging AI for enterprise solutions, demonstrating a pressing need for a dedicated team led by DeSantis.
Jassy noted that with the recent launch of the Nova 2 models and a commitment to developing proprietary silicon, the decision to form this new AI division was strategic. “We wanted to free Peter up to focus his energy, invention cycles, and leadership on these new areas,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of optimizing across AI models, chip technologies, and cloud infrastructure.
As Amazon intensifies its focus on AI, the company is seemingly more inclined to bolster its presence through substantial investments in AI infrastructure rather than purely through internal innovations. Last month, AWS revealed plans for a $50 billion investment aimed at enhancing the U.S. government’s AI capabilities. Moreover, Amazon is reportedly negotiating a $10 billion investment in OpenAI, building on its prior commitments, which included an $8 billion investment in Anthropic, a competitor in the AI space.
