Aalyria Secures $100M Investment for Space Networking Innovation

Aalyria Technologies Inc. has secured a significant investment of $100 million, achieving a valuation of $1.3 billion. This funding round was led by Battery Ventures and J2 Ventures and marks a pivotal moment for the Livermore, California-based company, which spun off from Alphabet Inc.’s X research lab four years ago. Notably, Alphabet is expected to maintain a stake in Aalyria.

Aalyria specializes in advanced space-based communication technologies. Its unique software platform, Spacetime, enhances connectivity by coordinating data transmission through low-Earth orbit satellite constellations. This innovative approach allows data to be relayed efficiently between multiple satellites until it reaches its final destination, thereby improving reliability and performance.

The Spacetime platform creates a digital twin of the satellite network, allowing for real-time monitoring and adjustments that account for potential disruptions, such as adverse weather conditions. For instance, rain can absorb radio waves, but the system smartly reconfigures antennas to minimize data loss by utilizing the C band spectrum, which is less susceptible to such interference.

Additionally, Spacetime can dynamically respond to the movement of devices, ensuring continuous connectivity even when a signal could be obstructed by obstacles like hills. This software also integrates seamlessly with other satellite management systems, enhancing versatility in data routing through third-party networks.

Aalyria’s portfolio includes the Tightbeam laser communication device, capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second over a distance of nearly 124 miles. The company aims to leverage this new capital to expand the adoption of its technological solutions and establish a network of optical feeder links to further enhance internet connectivity for satellite systems.
