ChatGPT has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing $3 billion in global consumer spending on its mobile app, according to data from app analytics firm Appfigures. This achievement reflects total expenditures made on both iOS and Android devices since the app’s initial launch in May 2023—when it was first available exclusively on iOS.
A closer look at spending reveals that the majority of this revenue has been accrued in just the past year. In 2025 alone, consumers are projected to spend approximately $2.48 billion on the ChatGPT app, marking an astonishing 408% increase from the $487 million recorded in 2024. The app’s inaugural year saw earnings of merely $42.9 million, which skyrocketed by over 1,000% to reach the 2024 figures.
ChatGPT achieved this remarkable benchmark more rapidly than leading streaming services such as Disney+ and HBO Max, which took 42 and 46 months, respectively, to hit the $3 billion mark.
In the competitive landscape of AI applications, xAI’s Grok shows a similar revenue growth pattern compared to ChatGPT. Launched in late 2023 for X Premium Plus subscribers, Grok has demonstrated a comparable spending trajectory since it began monetizing.
While the $3 billion milestone illustrates strong consumer engagement, it is essential to recognize this figure as just one metric for assessing AI app adoption and future revenue potential. ChatGPT monetizes through various subscription models, including its $20 per month ChatGPT Plus and the $200 per month ChatGPT Pro for advanced users. Additionally, the app may soon explore advertising avenues, as indicated in a recent blog post.
Amidst these developments, Google is investigating opportunities to integrate its lucrative search ads into AI-driven environments, enhancing user engagement through AI Mode, AI Overviews, and personalized AI shopping experiences. Meanwhile, Anthropic is targeting the corporate sector and is projected to generate $70 billion in revenue by 2028.
