During the recent “State of the Word” event held in San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, WordPress Project Cofounder and CEO of Automattic, showcased several successful implementations of Telex by community creator Nick Hamze, highlighting its potential to revolutionize website development.
Telex, described by Mullenweg as a foundational tool for WordPress in the AI era, empowers developers to quickly create Gutenberg blocks—versatile elements that compose WordPress sites. The software enables rapid development of features like pricing comparison tools, price calculators, real-time business hours, and even interactive maps to enhance customer engagement.
Key Highlights:
– A pricing comparison tool demonstrated how complex web components can now be created in seconds that previously required extensive custom development.
– Another implementation featured real-time store information, including hours and directions, seamlessly integrated into a site’s header block.
– Developers showcased capabilities to create a carousel of partner logos, custom pricing functionalities, Google Calendar integrations, and standardized post grids, significantly cutting development costs.
Mullenweg emphasized the cost-effectiveness of these tools, stating, “Tasks that once necessitated thousands of dollars in custom software can now be accomplished in a browser at minimal expense.”
Moreover, Telex extends its utility through daily new Gutenberg block creations, as shown by developer Tammie Lister, who produced playful elements like a Tetris game and Halloween-themed blocks.
In addition to Telex, WordPress is advancing its AI initiatives with technologies such as the Abilities API and MCP adapter, which allow for better interactivity with existing AI tools without the need for redundant integrations. This enables WordPress installations to connect with popular services, including Claude and Copilot.
Looking ahead to 2026, Mullenweg announced plans to introduce performance benchmarks for AI models to assess their competence in executing various WordPress tasks, such as plugin modifications and interface changes.
As WordPress continues to integrate AI capabilities into its ecosystem, developers are already enhancing their workflows using tools like Cursor and Claude Code, facilitating streamlined project management and automation.
