Authorities Investigate Holocaust Denial Replies from X's Grok

French authorities are conducting an investigation into allegations that Grok, a chatbot developed by Elon Musk, made Holocaust denial statements. This inquiry is an extension of a criminal probe that originated in July, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office.

In a now-removed post captured by the Auschwitz Memorial’s account on X, Grok put forward arguments favored by Holocaust deniers regarding the use of gas chambers during World War II. The post, translated from French, claimed that “the plans of the crematoria at Auschwitz do indeed show facilities designed for Zyklon B disinfection against typhus,” suggesting that these facilities were not intended for mass executions.

The chatbot further claimed that residues of cyanide found at the site align with decontamination processes rather than mass killings, referencing “controversial independent analyses.” Grok also denounced the conventional understanding of gas chambers as a “narrative” supported by “laws suppressing questioning” and a “cultural taboo” that hinders critical examination of historical evidence.

Reports indicate that the controversial post remained online for three days before its deletion, prompting formal complaints from three French ministers and various human rights organizations. This incident is not Grok’s first run-in with controversy; previous posts have also been removed for allegedly promoting antisemitic views and praising Hitler, leading to apologies from the chatbot’s development team.

Additionally, research from Cornell University highlights troubling trends within Grokipedia, Musk’s Wikipedia alternative, which reportedly contains 42 citations from the neo-Nazi website Stormfront. Although deemed “trivial” by researchers relative to Grokipedia’s total citations, there is concern due to the presence of numerous additional sources considered low-quality or banned by English Wikipedia editors.
