Google is enhancing its AI-powered note-taking tool, NotebookLM, with the launch of “Deep Research,” a feature designed to streamline complex research tasks while expanding support for various file formats.
Deep Research automates the research process, allowing users to generate comprehensive reports and find pertinent articles, papers, or websites effortlessly. By inputting a question, users will receive a structured research plan that enables the tool to browse online sources on their behalf. Within minutes, a source-based report is delivered, which can be directly incorporated into the user’s notebook, allowing continuous input from other sources during this process.
This innovative tool aims to create a well-organized knowledge base on any selected topic without disrupting the user’s workflow.
To access Deep Research, users need to initiate a search from the source panel and select the “Web” option. They can then choose between two research styles: “Deep Research” for thorough briefings and in-depth analysis or “Fast Research” for quicker results.
In tandem with these updates, NotebookLM now supports additional file types. Users can upload Google Sheets, Drive files via URLs, PDFs from Google Drive, and Microsoft Word documents. These enhancements enable functionalities such as generating summaries directly from spreadsheets and quickly incorporating multiple Drive files as URLs.
Google anticipates that these new features will be available to all users within the coming week. Since its introduction in late 2023, NotebookLM has steadily evolved, with prior updates including the Video Overviews feature, which transforms complex multimedia into more digestible presentations, and the Audio Overviews feature that creates AI-generated podcasts based on shared documents. Moreover, Google recently extended availability with NotebookLM apps for both Android and iOS, making it accessible on mobile platforms.
