Google is set to revolutionize the online shopping landscape with a host of innovative AI features ahead of the holiday season. Announced on Thursday, the updates include conversational shopping capabilities in Google Search, enhancements within the Gemini app, agentic checkout functionality, and a groundbreaking AI tool designed to call local retailers to check on product availability.

According to Vidhya Srinivasan, Vice President and General Manager of Ads and Commerce at Google, these features aim to streamline the online shopping experience, alleviating the often tedious aspects consumers face today. “Shopping should feel more natural and enjoyable,” Srinivasan stated in a press briefing. “We want to retain the exciting elements of browsing and discovery while removing the hard work.”

Key Updates:

  • Conversational Search: The AI Mode will allow users to engage in natural language queries, presenting tailored responses that include images, prices, reviews, and real-time inventory data. For example, a search for cozy sweaters will yield visual options, whereas comparisons like skin care products will be delivered in a handy table format.

  • Enhanced Gemini App: Users in the U.S. can look forward to richer, more comprehensive responses in the Gemini app, as it shifts from simple text suggestions to more insightful ideas tailored to shopping-related inquiries.

  • Agentic Checkout: This new feature, currently available in the U.S., allows shoppers to track item prices and receive notifications when they drop within a specified budget. Users can then authorize Google to complete the purchase on their behalf using Google Pay, ensuring a seamless and secure transaction process.

  • AI Product Inquiries: Leveraging Google’s Duplex technology, this feature allows the AI to call local stores to inquire about product availability and promotions. Relevant categories for this service include toys, health and beauty, and electronics. Users can initiate the inquiry by searching for products "near me" and opting for the "Let Google Call" option.

Retailers have the choice to opt out of receiving calls, and Google assures that the AI will clearly identify itself and seek permission before proceeding with the inquiry.

Despite plans for a live technology demonstration during the briefing, technical difficulties resulted in the segment being canceled. These advanced features underscore Google’s commitment to enhancing the e-commerce experience, making shopping more efficient and enjoyable for consumers while supporting retailers in reaching potential customers more effectively.
